INDIANAPOLIS - High school boys and girls soccer now have a third classification in Indiana.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association's Executive Committee approved the additional class by 17-2 on Friday. The change takes effect immediately, although soccer is a fall sport.

Last season featured 299 boys teams and 266 girls teams, and the IHSAA expects those numbers to grow for next year.

The division of classes will be based on school enrollment figures for a two school year cycle. The IHSAA published enrollments on Monday. A class-by-class breakdown for soccer will be made public in March. New sectional assignments will come in May.

Soccer was a one-class sport in Indiana from 1994 to 2010. Both the boys and girls versions have been two-classifications since 2011.

More than 72 percent of principals, athletic directors, boys head coaches and girls soccer head coaches favored the change in a recently conducted survey, according to the IHSAA.
