Braves keep focus in return to semi-state

By Eric Dutkiewicz, 03/15/19, 3:45PM EDT

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - At Blackhawk Christian, it’s all business as the boys basketball team readies for a second-straight 1A semi-state appearance.

The top-ranked Braves (26-2) return to the state’s semi-final round with focus and beyond the heartbreak of a 55-53 semi-state loss to Southwood a year ago

“Our motto this postseason has been to say in the moment,” sophomore forward Caleb Furst says. “You don’t want to look too far ahead; you don’t want to dwell in the past.”

Those moments Blackhawk Christian has had this postseason are nothing short of remarkable. The Braves breezed through the Fremont Sectional, scoring 94, 114 and 99 points in successive games. At the Triton Regional, second-half surges pushed them past No. 3 Gary 21st Century and No. 7 Argos. For the tournament, Blackhawk Christian is averaging 47.6-point wins.

“Part of our responsibilities as coaches is to maintain that emotional even-keel,” head coach Marc Davidson tells “They’ve never gotten too high after a win, they’ve never been too down after losses.”

Lafayette Central Catholic (22-4), also ranked No. 3, is the next opponent in Blackhawk Christian’s quest for a state championship. The Knights (67.3 points per game) may not score as much as the Blackhawk Christian (80.1), but their defense is formidable. None of LCC’s last 8 opponents has reached 50 points; the Knights are 7-1 in those games.

“It’s a good team that we’re playing against. They’re there for a reason,” Blackhawk Christian senior guard Trinity Clark admits.

Blackhawk Christian and Lafayette Central Catholic face off at the 1A Elkhart Central Semi-State on Saturday. The game tips off at 4 p.m from the North Side Gymnasium, 300 Lawrence Street in Elkhart. Tickets are $10. The game will be broadcast on Summit City Sports, ESPN Radio 1380AM/100.9 FM, FOX Sports 1250AM The Ticket and WRSW 107.3 FM.
