5 Snider football players sign to play in college

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Five Snider football players cemented their college plans Wednesday during a signing at the school.

Running back Christian Covington, quarterback Michael Haupert, defensive lineman Zach McDowell, offensive lineman Garrett Carroll and placekicker/punter Jack James are all part of a Panther senior class that won won the 2015 5A state championship, 1 semi-state title, 3 regional titles, 4 sectional titles, 2 Summit Athletic Conference titles and 88.4 percent of its games.

Running back Christian Covington signed with Indiana State University. Covington rushed for for 1,373 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior. Covington earned All-SAC and All-State honors. He plans to study business management. 

Joining Covington in Terre Haute is quarterback Michael Haupert, who passed for 1,701 yards, 21 touchdowns and 5 interceptions this past season. He also completed 56.7 percent of his passes. Haupert plans to study chemistry at Indiana State.

Defensive lineman Zach McDowell will play his college football at Grand Valley State University, an NCAA Division II program in Allendale, Mich. McDowell tallied 47 tackles and 3 sacks as senior, earning All-SAC and All-State honors. He is undecided on a major.

Offensive lineman Garrett Carroll also signed with Grand Valley State University. He was an All-SAC and All-State selection as a senior. Carroll plans to study communications or criminal justice at GVSU.

Placekicker/punter Jack James joins the back-to-back NAIA national champion University of Saint Francis. He nailed 10 of 11 field goals and 63 of 67 extra points in the fall. He averaged 39.6 yards per punt. He was an All-SAC selection. James plans to study business.
